The Jara Weekend Checklist: What to Pack, Skip, and Never Forget

Every few weeks someone messages us the night before their trip asking the same question: "What should I actually bring?" So we put together the honest answer, the one we'd give a friend, not a brochure.

Pack This

Something you don't mind getting sandy. Sounds obvious until you're standing at the shoreline in your best outfit wondering why you didn't bring a second option. Bring one "nice" outfit for dinner and everything else can be relaxed.

A power bank. You'll be taking more photos than you think, and there's nothing worse than watching your battery die right as the sunset hits.

Cash in small denominations. For tips, for the guy selling coconut by the water, for the small extras that make a trip feel generous instead of transactional.

A light cover-up or throw. Evenings by the water cool down faster than people expect, especially if the breeze picks up after dinner.

Any medication you take regularly. We're 45 minutes to an hour from the nearest well-stocked pharmacy depending on traffic, so don't assume you can just "get it there."

Skip This

Heavy luggage. If you're staying two nights, you need two nights of clothes, not a full suitcase. Space in the rooms is meant for relaxing, not unpacking a wardrobe.

Your work laptop. We say this every time and people bring it anyway. If you must, at least leave it in the room the first night.

High heels or anything impractical for sand. You will regret this within the first ten minutes.

Strict plans for every hour. The best Jara weekends are the ones where nobody checks a schedule after 10am.

Never Forget

Sunscreen, reapplied, not just packed. The Lagos sun by the water is stronger than people expect, even on cloudy days.

Your appetite. Come hungry. Whatever you think you'll eat, you'll eat more, and that's the point.

A little flexibility. Weather shifts, plans change, and the guests who have the best time are the ones who roll with it rather than fight it.

To actually put your phone down. You came here to unwind. Let the group chat wait.
